Ian Goodfellow Professor of Virology at University of Cambridge Ian Goodfellow’s lab investigates the unique molecular biology of caliciviruses, with a focus on translation and replication. The team discovered a novel VPg-dependent translation initiation mechanism, where the viral protein VPg recruits host translation factors, bypassing the need for a 5' cap. My work explores how interdisciplinary approaches—informed by open education, formal methods, poststructuralist theory, and indigenous knowledge systems—can shape technical systems. I design analytical frameworks and software that visualize complex textual relationships, employ privacy-preserving algorithms, and democratize computational thinking through intuitive interfaces and historically contextualized data representations. My projects, which include multi-document network analysis tools, privacy-first image processing pipelines, and interactive machine learning platforms, aim to reveal and critically engage with socio-technical assumptions in computational architectures.
Philip Allmendinger Pro Vice Chancellor, University of London Phil Allmendinger has published extensively in the areas of property and planning, planning theory, policy and practice, land and property regulation, housing and local government. His research thus spans across several of the Department‘s interests, especially in planning, property and housing. Professor Allmendinger is a chartered planner and surveyor. He initially trained as a spatial planner and has also worked in local government. He is a member of the Economic and Social Research Council Research Grants Board and a member of the Communities and Local Government Housing Markets and Planning Expert Panel.
