The "Sustainability through Science: Environmental Biotechnology" course offers a comprehensive exploration of the intersection between biotechnology and environmental sustainability. Throughout its series of lectures, this course delves into the fundamental principles and advanced applications of biotechnology in addressing environmental challenges. Topics span from the introduction of environmental biotechnology to the application of genetic engineering for sustainability, waste management, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and the intricate relationship between biotechnology and various environmental sectors. It further delves into cutting-edge advancements in nanotechnology, climate change mitigation strategies, and the crucial role of policy-making and ethics in the field. Students will engage with case studies, emerging trends in green chemistry, and futuristic perspectives, gaining an in-depth understanding of the potential, limitations, and ethical considerations within environmental biotechnology. This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and tools necessary to contribute to innovative solutions for a more sustainable future through the lens of scientific and technological advancements in environmental biotechnology.
At the end of the program, students will receive a certificate & performance letter by the educator indicating that they have completed the program and acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their chosen profession.
Sustainability through Science: Environmental Biotechnology, by Victor Pereira
Victor Pereira is lecturer on education and Co-Chair of the Teaching and Teaching Leadership program (TTL). He earned his Bachelor of Science in biology and Master of Arts in teaching from Boston College. Prior to coming to HGSE, Pereira taught, coached, mentored and worked in many teacher-leadership roles for 14 years in Boston Public Schools. In 2012, Pereira was the Massachusetts Recipient of the Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence. Pereira has worked with the teacher preparation programs at HGSE in many different capacities since 2004 focused on developing new teachers and improving science teaching and learning in middle and high school classrooms. Pereira’s passion is helping science educators promote scientific literacy through authentic and relevant learning opportunities that prepare students to be informed and engaged citizens.
